Dynamic Crowd Control for Mass Transit: Real-Time Platform Occupancy Management
The Brief
Bigger coverage area, faster processing, more accurate insights. Xovis' PF-Series 3D stereovision sensor is superpowered for seamless, privacy-compliant large area analytics in retail, airports and beyond.
The Challenge: Peak-Hour Platform Congestion
During rush hour, passenger influx can quickly outpace train capacity, leading to dangerous overcrowding on the platform. For mass transit networks, relying on manual observation to manage this flow is inefficient and risky. Operators need an automated, highly accurate way to know exactly how many people are on the platform at any given second, so they can halt incoming traffic at the turnstiles before capacity is breached.
The Solution: Wide-Area Multi-Sensor Counting
To solve this, we deployed a high-precision Xovis people counting solution designed specifically for large-scale transit environments. Rather than tracking individual passenger paths, this system acts as an ultra-accurate, real-time occupancy gauge for the entire platform.
By seamlessly stitching together a network of overhead Xovis sensors, we created:
- Real-Time Occupancy Tracking: The seamlessly stitched sensors continuously monitor the net inflow and outflow of passengers moving from the concourse down to the platform.
- Automated Gate Control: When the platform reaches its predefined maximum capacity, the system's real-time data triggers an immediate protocol to temporarily close the entrance gates.
- Safe Space Release: As trains depart and platform space is released, the live occupancy count drops below the safety threshold, signaling the turnstiles to automatically reopen and resume passenger flow safely.
